Application for support

Purpose

The Indigenous Solicitors' Foundation Limited (ACN 668 469 216) (ISF) is a charitable organisation registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-Profits Commission. Its purpose is to reduce the financial and cultural barriers, discrimination, isolation or hardship experienced by Aboriginal and Torress Strait Islander persons pursuing (or wishing to pursue) a career in law by:

  • providing financial support to Indigenous students and lawyers to support the advancement of their careers in the legal sector;

  • supporting and faciliating programs, projects and initiatives;

  • educating and increasing awareness of individuals, communities, business and government about the issues facing and relating to the pursuit of a career in law by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people;

  • collaborating with individuals, organisations, business and government; and

  • any other activities ancillary to or necessary to fulfill its charitable purpose.

The Law Society of New South Wales (the Law Society) is the sole member of the ISF.

Types of support available

Support may include but is not limited to financial contribution towards legal or post legal studies, such as costs of text books, course fees, transportation and accommodation costs associated with study, practical legal training requirements or admission. Support may also include contributions towards indirect but necessary matters such as IT equipment, business attire for interviews and costs associated with caring responsibilities.

Process and timeline

The ISF Board of Directors (Board) will meet to consider applications as are received. The Board may also delegate application decisions to persons working within the Law Society, the sole member of the ISF. Processing times may vary and will depend on the information provided in applications. Currently the Board aims to consider applications within one month of receipt. Where possible, the Board will consider applications on a more urgent basis if requested.

All decisions will be made at the absolute discretion of the Board and all of the Board's decisions are final.

Role of the Law Society

The Law Society provides administrative assistance to the ISF. Applications will be processed and managed by Law Society staff and the Law Society will receive and hold information provided by applicants in accordance with its Privacy Policy.

Confirmation of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander status

In order to be eligible to apply for funding, you are asked to show that you are an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person, and provide proof that you:

1. Are of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent; and

2. Identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person; and

3. Are accepted as such by the community in which you live or have lived.


Preferred evidence

A letter or membership confirmation from a:

  • Local Aboriginal Land Council; or

  • Native Title Prescribed Body Corporate; or

  • Registered Stolen Generations Organisation.

Alternative evidence

The ISF will also consider:

  • A confirmation of Aboriginality or Torres Strait Islander status, with a common seal; AND

  • A letter of support from an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Community Controlled Organisation dated within 12 months of the date of application, confirming active participation within that Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander community.
